Laerskool Schweizer teacher suspended because of controversial photo

A gr.R teacher at Schweizer-Reneke Primary School was suspended today (10 January) pending an investigation.

A gr.R teacher at Schweizer-Reneke Primary School was suspended today (10 January) pending an investigation.

This was after a photograph appeared which appears to show white and black children segregated in the classroom.

Northwest MEC for education Sello Lehari visited the school on Thursday to meet the principal. According to Lehari, during this meeting he was told that the four black children were sitting separately because they were new and could not speak English or Afrikaans.

Lehari told a group of protesters at the school that this was not an acceptable excuse.

Several parents removed their children from the school after about 150 protesters entered the premises. According to an eyewitness, protesters were protesting peacefully at about 10:30 on Thursday. More photos of the children all sitting together were also shared on social media. However, many believe that this was done to try and curb the damage done by the other photo.
