North-West University’s Class of 2020 graduates in midst of Coronavirus pandemic. The university hosted its first-ever virtual graduation ceremony last Friday, 29 May.
All degrees and awarding of diplomas were conferred online.
The ceremony comprised the conferral of all the qualifications that would have been conferred to the graduates from 23 March to 22 May, from all eight faculties (Faculties of Economic Management Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Theology), from all three NWU campuses.
In an article by NWU, a total of 9 195 qualifications were awarded to the graduates.
The conferred degrees included:
- 167 Doctoral
- 553 Master’s
- 1 224 Honours
- 4 992 Bachelor’s degrees
- 94 Postgraduate diplomas
- 1 439 Diplomas
- 726 Certificates
Prof Dan Kgwadi, the vice-chancellor, said that due to Covid-19, the NWU community could not celebrate the graduation in person with students and their families, however, it should not take away their exciting and overwhelming sense of achievement.
He added that due to the pandemic, the Class of 2020 enters a world that was not anticipated by anyone, nonetheless, it is a world filled with opportunities. “We at the NWU are very confident that we have instilled in you a vision to imagine possibilities. As you do that, let us all be thankful for what the Lord has enabled us to achieve.
“Go out there and celebrate the diversities of this world that you are going to enter,” said Prof Kgwadi.
