Sewage blocks stadium entrance

The Mohadin stadium has not been used for the past three years due to ever-worsening sewage blocking the only entrance.

The Mohadin stadium has not been used for the past three years due to ever-worsening sewage blocking the only entrance.

The situation makes it difficult for a car or person to pass through. A concerned resident, who asked to remain anonymous, has been pleading with the municipality to remove the sewage in front of the grounds. She wants the children in the community to keep themselves busy with sports instead of roaming around the streets and participating in activities they shouldn’t.

“This could be a great initiative to help prevent our children from getting involved in drugs,” she added. Meanwhile, the resident suggests they build a bridge over the sew-age to at least be able to use the grounds while they find a solution.

“They keep telling me it is not in the budget, but they will look into it,” she said. “It isn’t safe for us here. A few weeks ago, I was trying to cross over with a small child, and the child fell into the sewage, The child is now traumatised and doesn’t want to come near this area. This is an issue that could easily have been avoided,” she added.

The grass is also unmaintained, making it unsafe to walk around the area. “All sorts of dodgy things could happen here. You would never know if someone is waiting for you behind the bushes or if someone is being raped.” the resident said.

“If the municipality expects us to fix and maintain this area, they should just admit it, and we will raise the funds to do so,” she concluded. The acting municipal communication manager, Jeanette Tshite, says according to detailed outcomes of investigations conducted by the consultant, the existing sewer outfall is insufficient to carry the current sewerage due to population growth over the past years.

“The line is due for upgrading. From a project management perspective, the designs were completed. The project is awaiting approval of the Water Use Licence application from the Department of Water and Sanitation,” she said.

“After that, the J.B. Marks Local Municipality will procure a contractor to commence with the construction work. It is a major challenge to curb spill-age during the rainy season due to storm water ingress,” she concluded.
