Cachet Park toilets still an ongoing project

What should be a sanitary facility for students and the community to use while on the Bult has become a filthy and unmaintained place that no one dares to enter.

What should be a sanitary facility for students and the community to use while on the Bult has become a filthy and unmaintained place that no one dares to enter.

Towards the end of last year, the municipality responded to multiple complaints regarding the toilet facilities at Cachet Park by assuring residents that the problem would be resolved by the end of December 2022.

According to Jeanette Tshite, the municipal spokesperson, there had been many reasons for the delay in fixing the facilities, including the vast scope of work required to repair them and get them to a fit state. However, she added that the municipality had consulted with the City Industrial District (CID) concerning the repairs and maintenance of the toilet facilities at Cachet Park.

“The process of procuring services to re-store them is at an advanced stage. The repairs should be completed before the end of December 2022,” Tshite promised previously.

As of now, the facilities have been cleaned but remain locked because they are not in a condition for the public to use. Johan Naude, CID chief administrative officer, says the feedback he received from the municipality was that there was a dispute between the municipality and the service provider conducting repairs on the toilets. “Until this is sorted out, it seems the toilets will, unfortunately, remain shut,” he said.

“We hope this issue is resolved soon as the users of the designated mini taxi rank still do not have toilet facilities.” According to Naude, once the project is complete, the facilities will be accessible to the public during working hours daily and on special occasions.

He added that the Cachet Park CID NPC had proposed that they enter into an agreement with the municipality where their security would open the facilities in the morning and lock them again at night. “This would be an extension of our existing agreement with the municipality,” he said. The Herald asked the municipality for comment but had received noth-ing by the time of print
