Consequences could be dire if negligence continues this fire season
Neglect in adhering to veld fire regulations has created cause for concern this fire season.
The damaging impact of veld fires has already ravaged thousands of hectares of farm land in the past month in the surrounding Potchefstroom areas.
Neglect in adhering to veld fire regulations has also created cause for concern this fire season.
The chairman of the North West Umbrella Fire Protection Association, Eric Stoch, has heeded a warning with regards to veld fires this season, stating that veld fire regulations has been largely neglected.
“The Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998 is not being adhered too and the consequences are dire. The lack of strategic firebreaks, particularly in critical areas, leaves us vulnerable to the uncontrollable spread of these devastating fires. This negligence extends beyond public entities, as numerous private land owners also fail to fulfil their obligations,” stated Stoch.

He also called on a quicker response time with regards to veldfires with an emphasis on fighting the fire as quick and hard as possible, whilst the fire is still manageable.
Financial constraints, in part of the Covid-19 pandemic, a string of droughts and catastrophic fires have also played a large part in the inability to successfully fight fires.
“If we allow this negligence and non-compliance to persist, the consequences will be devastating. Lives will be lost, livelihoods shattered, food security compromised and the environment irreparably degraded,” added Stoch.
“When we neglect to extinguish our cigarettes properly, when we neglect the impact of discarded glass or metal that can magnify sunlight into an inferno, we not only endanger our surroundings but also the lives of fellow beings – human and animal alike. The devastation caused by wildfires extends beyond the immediate loss.”
According to Stoch, with every wildfire, entire ecosystems are thrown into chaos.
“Plants, insects, and animals that call these areas home are forced to flee or perish. Our unique biomes, shaped over millennia, are irrevocably altered. The balance of nature, once disrupted, is challenging to restore.”
He also emphasised on how water scarcity becomes an even bigger dilemma due to the devastating impact of fire.
“Water, a lifeline for communities and agriculture, becomes scarcer as the land loses its ability to recharge subterranean aquifers. The water that once sustained our needs becomes a rarity, impacting our ability to grow crops, support livestock, and nourish our families. In a world where water is life, the repercussions are far-reaching.”
Stoch further implored the community at large to unite and take responsibility for ensuring fire safety.
“By preventing wildfires, we protect lives, livelihoods, and the delicate balance of nature itself. Let us rise above negligence, for the sake of our land, our people and generations to come. If we do not heed this warning, we face an impending disaster.”
