A simple act of kindness is helping to keep some of Potchefstroom’s smallest and most vulnerable patients warm this winter.

Former Potchefstroom Hospital Nursing Manager, Maria Seleke from Klerksdorp, has been knitting tiny woollen beanies for premature babies admitted to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), ensuring each newborn receives a handmade gift of warmth and comfort.

The heartfelt initiative aims to provide support to premature infants during the critical first days of their lives, while reminding their families that they are not alone on their journey.

Seleke, who previously worked at Potchefstroom Hospital, said the inspiration for the project came from the remarkable babies she met during her time at the hospital.

“I had the privilege of working at Potchefstroom Hospital and meeting these tiny miracles who came through the doors of the NICU. Their fighting spirit inspired me to reach out and make a difference,” she said.

As temperatures continue to drop this winter, the handmade beanies are not only helping to keep the babies warm, but also serve as a symbol of hope, love and compassion.

For the tiny fighters beginning life’s journey in the NICU, every stitch represents a reminder that an entire community cares about their wellbeing.
