The cream of the crop of NWU athletes will represent South Africa at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 – August 2 with the aim of returning to Potch with medals around their necks.
Bradley Nkoana (4 x 100m), Franco le Roux (110m hurdles), Rogail Joseph (400m hurdles) and Liezel Gouws (100 m, 200 m and long jump (para-athletics) will fly the South African flag high. Shaun Bownes (hurdles and sprint coach) and Tracey Olivier (NWU Athletics Manager) will also form part of team SA.
Ethan Olivier, son of Tracey, will represent New Zealand in triple jump.
Nkoana recently became the 12th South African sprinter in history to break the 10 second barrier with a new personal best of 9.95 seconds. The former Potch Boys High learner achieved this in Nivelles, Belgium on June 27.
Joseph is a three-time African champion in the 400m hurdles having won gold at the 2026 event in Ghana.
Waldouw Smit and Jo-Ané du Plessis are two NWU-alumni who will also represent South Africa in javelin at the Commonwealth Games.
