It was a case of Déjà-vu for Jomo Cosmos as they played to their fourth goalless draw this season, against Kaizer Chiefs at Olën Park on Tuesday evening.

All Cosmos’ points in the Absa Premiership have so far come from 0-0 draws and this time it was no different for Jomo Sono’s men, who have struggled to find the net this season.  Although the match ended in a stalemate, it was all but boring as both sides had chances to take the win through some enterprising play.

Jomo Cosmos’ resistant defence in the 4-2-3-1 formation was one of the highlights of the evening as they scrapped and scraped for all their worth to deny Chiefs two opportunities in the last 2 minutes of the match.  Sherwyn Naicker was excellent in goal for Cosmos as he gave an energetic all round performance. He was ably assisted by Thato Lingwati and Frederick Nsabiyumva in defence as they kept Chiefs’ Edward Manqele and Camaldine Abraw at bay.

The Chiefs’ fans were disappointed that their team could not get a win – it must be said they deserved a good result after filling Olën Park to capacity for the first time in years. Cosmos’ fans will be smiling that they received a single point against the defending Absa Premiership champions. They will also be beaming with delight at Mxolisi Machupu and Pentjie Zulu who were attacking menaces during the game. The attackers did a lot of hard work and Cosmos almost earned their reward in the first half when Pilot Mthembu missed a headed goal by inches.

Chiefs could also not bury their chances with Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Bernard Parker failing to hit the target. Amakhosi had the majority of the possession and territory but kept losing the ball in the box and spurned a number of opportunities. Chiefs were at their most dangerous on the left-hand side as Tsepo Masilela and Siphiwe Tshabalala missed golden opportunities to score in the second half.

In the end, Jomo Cosmos will be the happier of the two teams as one point against Chiefs is definitely better than none.
