Rain was the great leveler as a soaking wet Olen Park greeted Jomo Cosmos and Orlando Pirates on Saturday, 23 January in an epic Absa Premiership match which Cosmos won 1-0 to thrill the home crowd.
Pirates on the other hands spilled their chance to climb up the table and are still in 12th position, just two point above Cosmos in 14th. Buccaneers fans were drenched and drowning in their sorrows when the match reached its conclusion – their ship slowly sinking as the season reaches its deep end.
The unrelenting rain that pelted down at Olen Park was the ultimate blessing for Jomo Cosmos as they soaked in the fantastic atmosphere and used the conditions to their advantage.
Charlton Mashumba continued his magic goal scoring form as he slipped past two defenders to calmly roll the ball past Pirates keeper, Brighton Mhlongo in the 74th minute.
Pirates should have taken controlled of the match early on but the brilliance of Cosmos keeper, Sherwin Naicker stopped them time and again. The most impressive save was in the 10th minute as he denied Lehlohonolo Majoro’s penalty kick with a blinding save.
The rain did not relent for the first half as the pitch grew more soggy with each sliding tackle and pass of the football. This made for a topsy-turvy match where chances came aplenty more through error than inspirational playmaking.
Pirates tried their best and had numerous claims for a penalty turned down as they hoped for a late reprieve. In the end Cosmos held on for a famous victory in Potchefstroom, with coach Jomo Sono fist pumping the air as the final whistle blew.
