The 2016 North West Spur School Series finished with a bang at the Tour de Bos in Brits as riders pushed their every limit to officially wear the yellow and pink jerseys this year.
Also up for grabs were the awards for the best competing school – something Potchefstroom Gimnasium comfortably took with a grand total of 770 points. Gimmies had a fantastic year with their individual riders gaining a number of top spots. Joné van Eeden took first place in the sub-junior girls’ category which was rich reward for her consistent performances throughout the year.
Ryan Conradie also took first place overall in the youth boys’ category, even though he did not compete in the Tour de Bos. His closest rival, Brendan van Eeden took the win in the race, but still finished second overall.
One of the shining lights this season in the girls’ youth category was Potchefstroom girls’ High’s Andrea de Waal, who took the top spot not only in race but also overall in the season. Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom still calls the junior men’s and women’s categories their own, though, with Brandon van der Berg and Kristen Louw prevailing against their challengers to both put in a fantastic final push at Hoërskool Wagpos.
Before the race, these two Volkies riders were both still in second place but showed that it is not over until the fat lady sings.
Van Der Berg was also named team captain of the North West School’s mountain bike team for the coming Spur Schools national final at Hoërskool Bekker from 8-9 October this year
North West are the defending champions and are looking strong to retain their title and complete an unprecedented double.
