A year ago, the name Brad Binder would not even have rung a bell for local MotoGP enthusiasts, never mind the general public. Now, a year later, the name of Potchefstroom born Brad Binder is on everybody’s lips as the newly crowned 2016 Moto3 World Champion – the first South African to achieve this feat since Johnny Ekerold won the 350cc class in 1980.
Binder took second place at the Aragon Grand Prix on Sunday 25 September to extend his lead in the championship to an unassailable 106 points with four races to go. This was his 11th podium finish this year, which also included 5 wins and four pole positions. Binder is currently on 249 points after a successful season that saw only one non-finish.
The South African’s reliability and consistency were two of his great features this season, not forgetting his nose for a gap and breathtaking overtaking manoeuvres on the track. His KTM Ajo motorbike was constantly in the top positions. His good form now sees him secure a seat in the more competitive Moto2 class for KTM next season.
Binder spent most of his childhood years in Carletonville and Krugersdorp before relocating to Spain to pursue a successful career in MotoGP.
‘I can’t believe it and I can’t really put it into words,’ he said after the race on Sunday.
‘A huge thank you to @redbull_ktm_ajo for an unforgettable year! Thank you to everyone for all the messages and support I really appreciate it!’ he posted on his Instagram account with a photo of his winning team.
