Athletics South Africa (ASA) has been chopping and changing it’s athletics squad for the IAAF World Athletics Champions in London, England over the past week, confusing athletes and creating quite a stir in the national media for their high athletics standards.
A number of SA Athletes met the IAAF’s international criteria, but for various dubious reasons were omitted in the squad when it was first announced this month.
Today, two more athletes, hurdles champion, Rikenette Steenkamp and discus thrower, Victor Hogan, were added to the 29 strong squad that will represent South Africa after having been invited by the IAAF.
Athletics Central North West will have Pieter Conradie (400 m), Arianne Nel (4×400 metres relay), Sunette Viljoen (Javelin), Caster Semenya (800m, 1500m and 4 x 400m Relay) and Gena Lofstrand (800m, 4×400 metres relay) competing in London.
