An anti-climax greeted the Senwes Park crowd this Friday afternoon when Dean Elgar was dismissed one run short of his first ever double century in test cricket in the first test against Bangladesh.

An ill-timed hook shot off Mustafizur Rahman’s bowling sealed his fate as the ball went straight up into the air for an easy catch to Mominul Haque.

Dean Elgar now holds the dubious record becoming the first South African test batsman to be out on 199 (388) as well as the tenth batsman on 199 in test cricket history.

Elgar though truly deserved a double century as he batted with patience, poise and purpose befitting a test opener. He struck 15 fours and 3 sixes in his knock that has truly taken the stuffing out of the Bangladesh bowling attack on a blustery and cold day.

Earlier Hashim Amla and Elgar put together a momentous 215-run partnership that put the game firmly in the Proteas grasp. Amla scored a brilliant 137 from 200 balls before being dismissed Shafiul Islam with the score on 411.

At tea on day 2, South Africa are on 496/3 with Temba Bavuma (31 off 81) and Faf du Plessis (26 off 49) carrying on the batting assault on day 2 with an unbeaten 51 run partnership.
