Athletics Central North West (ACNW) once again showed their class with a third place at the ASA Senior National Track and Field Champions at the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria from 15 to 17 March.
ACNW racked up an impressive total of 23 medals, which included five gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals.
Some of the outstanding achievements include the middle-distance athlete, Jerry Motsau’s national victory in the 5 000 metres for men and a silver in the men’s 1 500 metres, after failing in 2017. It was a personal triumph for Motsau who, after a difficult year, had given everything to reach the top of the mountain again. Motsau achieved a time of 03:45.94 in the 1 500 metres and 14:14.07 in the 5 000 metres.
Jo-Ané van Dyk also took gold with a javelin throw of 53.65 beating ACNW compatriots Megan Wilke and Tazmin Brits.
With a throw of 69.01 metres, Tshepang Makhethe also pushed SA champion, Chris Harmse all the way in the men’s hammer throw. It was a titanic battle but Harmse once again showed why he is a legend with a 23rd consecutive SA title as he hit the 70.62-metre mark.
*The 2018 ASA Senior National Track and Field Championships will be remembered for the record breakers too as Clarence Munyai of Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) took 0.15 seconds off the SA 200 metres record set by Wayde van Niekerk in Kingston, Jamaica in June last year. Munyai raced to a brilliant time of 19.69. Carina Horn, also of AGN, broke a 28-year-old record in the women’s 100 metres with a time of 11:03, beating Evette de Klerk’s record of 11:06 set in 1990.
