Two of Potchefstroom Gimnasium’s cricketing pride, Ruan Haasbroek and Marco Jansen took the North West Dragons over the line in their CSA Provincial One Day encounter against SWD on Sunday, 13 January.
The Dragons beat SWD by four wickets at Senwes Park as Haasbroek (21 off 20) and Jansen (11 off 12) kept things cool on a sweltering day in Potchefstroom.
Earlier, SWD could only post 187/9 in their 50 overs as the Dragons’ bowling attack kept things tidy. The local, Lourén Steenkamp, was one of the top bowlers on the day; he picked up 2/17 at an economy rate of 2.42. Brady Barends (2/23), Johannes Diseko (2/45) and Katle Leokaoke (2/33) were also on the top of their game with the white ball in hand. Only Obus Pienaar, with an unbeaten 83 (110), showed any resistance from the visitors.

The Dragons chased the target without much fuss as Jean Bredenkamp (55 off 98) and Richardt Frenz (37 off 55) played some technically perfect strokes for the Dragons. This after the Dragons lost their opener, Yassar Cook, early for 10 and Lesego Senokwane for 26 after the former and Bredenkamp put on a half-century partnership.
Steenkamp added 21 before he was needlessly run out but Haasbroek and Jansen then took the game by the scruff of the neck to take the Dragons home.
