Taking a swing to the top

His goal for the next five years is to make a name for himself on the Sunshine Tour.

One of North West and SA’s up-and-coming young golfers is NWU BSc IT student, Wade Jacobs.
Jacobs hails from the neighbouring city of Klerksdorp, approximately 40 km from Potchefstroom. He has spent his fair share of time in golf courses across the country.
His past success stories on the greens include winning the North West Open, Klerksdorp Open, Lichtenburg Open, Orkney Open and Club Championships in Klerksdorp.
This is only the start for this young golfer, who has dreams of making it big in the golfing landscape.

“I started playing golf when I was 13 years old. My dad introduced me to the sport and I just fell in love with it after that,” says Jacobs.

From there on, Jacobs kept reaching the top of the junior golf leagues in the province and continued to impress all and sundry on North West’s various courses.
His first big break came when he was chosen for the North West Inter-provincial team.
“It kind of started to sink in because it is not easy to get picked for this specific team,” remembers Jacobs, who looks to golfing legend Tiger Woods as his hero.
Golf at North-West University definitely is a growing sport and Jacobs is one of the frontrunners.
“Trials are held to select the best eight players. Students practise at Potchefstroom Country Club’s golf course,” he adds.
His greatest motivation comes from his family and friends who support him through every swing, chip and putt.
“My girlfriend, parents and brother are my greatest supporters.”
His goal for the next five years is to make a name for himself on the Sunshine Tour.
“I would like to obtain my tour card at the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School. I would also like to win the SA Open and play on both the Sunshine Tour and The European tour.”
