SA Olympians struggle on day 1

In the men's hockey group match, South Africa lost 3-1 to Great Britain. The ladies hockey team lost 2-0 to Ireland

It was a day of disappointment for South Africa on day 1 of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Although there were inspiring performances from Nicholas Dlamini in the men’s road race most of the teams and athletes ended up on the losing end.

In the men’s hockey group match, South Africa lost 3-1 to Great Britain. The ladies hockey team lost 2-0 to Ireland and both teams will need to regroup heading into their next matches.

  • Rowing: Men’s Pair heat 1 (Luc Daffarn, Jake Green) – 5th place
  • Men’s Cycling Road Race: Stefan de Bod – 52nd place. Nicholas Dlamini – DNF, Ryan Gibbons – DNF 
  • Rowing: Men’s Four heat 1 (Lawrence Brittain, Kyle Schoonbee, John Smith, Sandro Torrente) – 5th place
  • Women’s Waterpolo: South Africa 4-29 Spain
