NWU outclass TUT in a 69-40 win

North-West University (NWU) continued to show why they must be considered for the title after taming TUT by 69-40 today in their fifth round of this year’s Varsity Netball tournament held in Stellenbosch.

North-West University (NWU) continued to show why they must be considered for the title after taming TUT by 69-40 today in their fifth round of this year’s Varsity Netball tournament held in Stellenbosch.

The NWU were just to good for TUT on the day, coach Elsunet du Plessis was forced to make a change in the defensive of her side as Catlinn Rossouw had academic responsibilities.

This didn’t stop the side from Potchefstroom in beating TUT. The NWU side started a bit shaky, but as time went on they got the momentum they were looking for.

Both Powerplays were taken by the sides in the opening quarter, which was a surprise. Elmeré van der Berg ensured she took all her opportunities in both powerplays scoring a total of 10 points for her side in these four minutes. The first quarter ended 22-12 to the NWU.

This healthy lead gave the North-West University the opportunity to bring some fresh legs on for the rest of the game. Couple of changes were made in the defense as well as in the circle.

A sloppy second quarter by TUT gave Jessica du Plessis and Daniele Malan the opportunity to create a massive 23-point lead going into the shed for half-time. The combination in the circle of the NWU worked and saw them tick over the score board and yet again claim another bonus point for scoring over 50 goals.

The speed of play in this quarter wasn’t the same as others, both sides players looked tired and fatigued. TUT also played some quality netball in this quarter. The third quarter ended 52-27. The final quarter saw most players that started the game for the Eagles return back onto the court.

TUT for the first time in this year’s tournament surpassed the 30-goal mark, which is a positive Faith Motau coach of the TUT side can take from this encounter.

NWU played a more free flowing game and limited the unforced errors. Goals were flying in from all areas in the circle, a good team effort from NWU will give them confidence heading into the last two round robin games.

The Player of the match award went to Elmeré van der Berg after a ruthless performance under the pole. The Eagles will face UFS Kovsies on Friday, 27 August at 13:00.
