The NWU and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) must be commended for hosting a brilliant FIH Men’s Hockey Nations Cup from 28 November – 4 December that showcased Potchefstroom as a sporting hub for international events. Shaun Hulley (NWU Hockey Manager) emphasised that the tournament was a resounding success and that the LOC received really positive feedback from all the nations that were involved.
“We had an LOC that put together a good product and ran the tournament well. It was great to have a near capacity crowd on the final day. We had feedback from every country where the accommodation, logistics and food were praised,” added Hulley.
He also stated that SA’s win was the cherry on top of a tournament that the NWU and NWU Hockey can be proud of.
“We made Potchefstroom and the university proud by hosting such an amazing event once again with no hiccups.”
Ireland ended the tournament in second place with Korea taking the bronze medal. The Irish were a solid team lead by Shane O’Donaghue’s goals and their astute captain, Sean Murray. The Korean’s were one of the eye-catching sides at the tournament.

Jaehyeon Kim was named as the goalkeeper of the tournament and defender, Jonghyun Jang named as the top scorer with 7 goals. The Young Player of the Tournament went to Corentin Sellier of France.
