Tamzin Thomas sprints to double victories at ASA Grand Prix in Potch

Local NWU athletes lit up the third and final leg of the ASA Grand Prix Series in Potchefstroom at the NWU McArthur stadium on Wednesday night (26 April).

Tamzin Thomas (NWU) showed her speed in the women’s 100m event finishing first in a time of 11.49 seconds. She also did the double winning the 200m race in 23.58 seconds.

In the women’s javelin event, SA champ, Jo-Ané van Dy,k racked up her umpteenth victory this season with a throw of 57.64 metres.

In the men’s javelin event, SA champion, Waldouw Smit, threw 79.95 metres to take the gold ahead of the Czech Republic’s Martin Konecny (73.03 metres) and NWU athlete, Johann Grobler in 71.75 metres.

Welré Olivier (NWU) took second in the men’s triple jump, behind his brother, Ethan who beat him by 19 centimetres with a jump of 16.42 metres.

Karmen Fouché had to settle for bronze in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.02 metres. Danielle Nolte of Tuks took first with a jump of 6.25 metres.

Stephany Petro also impressed for the NWU taking gold in the women’s 1500 metre race in a time of 04:35.57.

Valco van Wyk (NWU) once again showed his supremacy in the men’s pole vault event clearing the bat at 5.45 metres.

Other favourites also showed their class on an electric night of athletics action in front of a packed local crowd.

Olympic finalist, Kyle Blignaut, took gold in the men’s shotput with a 20.03m throw. Talented hurdler, Marione Fourie took gold in the women’s 100m hurdles in a time of 13.01 seconds.

Samwel Imeta (Kenya) won the men’s 100m race in a time of 10.12, whilst 21-year-old Sinesipho Dambile won the 200m dash in 20.47.

SA record holder in the women’s hammer throw, Leandri Geel, took gold with a throw of 62.62 metres. NWU’s Marga Cumming took silver with a heave of 61.46 metres.
