The top up-and-coming girls cricketers from around the country gathered in Potchefstroom this past December for the CSA Girls U19 Week.
Deidré van Rensburg (Potchefstroom Gimnasium) showed her potential for North West and produced a number of strong performances that earned her selection for the SA Fillies team. The SA Fillies squad is the “A-side” selected as secondary to the prestigious SA Schools team.
Van Rensburg started the week with a half-century against Free State, scoring 56 as the North West girls romped to a 61-run victory. She also took 2/33 with the ball in the same match. In the final match against Western Province, she struck an unbeaten 48 in a 20-run loss.
Tshegofatso Monyela of Saints Christian School also put her hand up with some impressive bowling performances, including figures of 3/23 that helped North West to a nail-biting two-run victory against the Limpopo Impalas.
She could not post meaningful scores with the bat despite her all-round ability. Monyela had previously been selected for SA Schools teams, but this time it was not to be for the talented opening batter.
North West succumbed to the Titans in their third match by 30 runs via the Duckworth–Lewis method in a rain-affected encounter.
Eastern Storm’s talented captain, Mieke van Voort, hit a magnificent century during the week and was also named as the cricketer of the week for her exploits.
Furthermore, she also captained the SA Schools side during their match against the Fillies at the JB Marks Oval. The SA Schools side completed a 31-run victory in the 20-over encounter.
