With Father’s Day around the corner on Sunday, 21 June, one of Potchefstroom’s own football loving dad’s will make his children prouder than most.
Amos “Dina” Dhlomo is living out his dream of representing South Africa on the international stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, the United States of America, and Canada.
Dhlomo was called up as a sports massage therapist for Bafana Bafana and is determined to make the most of this golden opportunity.
Dhlomo, who was born in Potchefstroom, was raised in Ikageng and the Vaal. He was a well-known footballer at Potchefstroom All Stars before injuries brought his playing career to an end. His dream of representing South Africa at a World Cup as a player was dashed, but it was reignited years later through his journey as a sought-after sports massage therapist.
Dhlomo, who is also a fitness trainer, was called up to the South Africa Under-23 national team in 2016 following his impressive work at Jomo Cosmos as a trainer and massage therapist. He later moved on to Polokwane City, Marumo Gallants and TTM (Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila). He also enjoyed success with the latter two clubs, both of whom won the Nedbank Cup during his time there.
According to his proud daughter, Asanele, rehabilitation is what drives her father in his profession.
“He is passionate about helping players recover and avoiding the same injury setbacks that he experienced during his playing days. His goal is to help every player recover quickly and remain on the pitch,” adds Asanele.
“It’s my dad’s dream to be at the World Cup because he couldn’t achieve it as a soccer player. Professionally, his goal is to keep the Bafana players healthy, help them recover quickly between games, and prevent injuries. He wants to do his job so well that the coaches and players can focus solely on the matches and make the country proud.”
