Murderer gets life for tavern stabbing
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the life sentence handed to Pako Tlape for the senseless murder of Isaac Sebule. The court also declared Tlape unfit to possess a firearm, underscoring the serious consequences of violent crime.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the life imprisonment sentence handed down to 35-year-old Pako Tlape for the murder of Isaac Soso Sebule (31) in July 2023.
The Molopo Regional Court delivered sentencing on September 15, also declaring Tlape unfit to possess a firearm.
According to the court, Tlape entered the Bhekindabazakho Tavern in Dithakong village on 29 July 2023, apparently searching for someone. Upon spotting Sebule, he approached him and, without saying a word, stabbed him fatally with a knife. Sebule was declared dead at the scene. Tlape was arrested on the same day and remained in custody until sentencing.
Tlape pleaded guilty on September 3. During sentencing, Prosecutor Nthabiseng Thabeng argued there were no compelling circumstances to deviate from the prescribed life term, pointing out Tlape’s lack of remorse and the senseless nature of the killing.
A Victim Impact Statement, compiled by Sebule’s mother with the help of Court Preparation Officer Thembinkosi Madiba, described her ongoing trauma, fear, and the deep psychological toll the murder has had on the family.
In handing down judgment, Magistrate Mathews stressed that nothing could replace a lost life and that it is the duty of the courts to ensure lawlessness does not prevail in a society plagued by violence.
Welcoming the outcome, the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, commended the investigation and prosecution teams.
“The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) remains steadfast in ensuring accountability. Violent crimes will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” she said.
