Teacher Pheladi speaks life into her learners
Eagle's Nest's Pheladi Rosina Chuene has been a teacher for more than 35 years and teaches Sepedi and Bible Studies.
POLOKWANE – “My teachers spoke life into me all those years ago, now I am speaking life into my learners.”
Teacher Pheladi Rosina Chuene is a motherly figure in the corridors of Eagle’s Nest Christian School, where she is employed.
The 62-year-old has been a teacher for more than 35 years, and at Eagle’s Nest since 2007.
Speaking on why she became a teacher, she says her biggest motivation was the inspiration she got from teachers.
“My teachers always spoke encouraging words, they spoke positivity, and that resonated with me.”
She teaches Sepedi and Bible studies to learners in the senior phase, and says she loves the interaction with learners and parents.
“Today, I get to be that, which made me all those years ago. I can do my part and speak positivity to whoever crosses my path and is in doubt. It is now my turn to return the favour that I received all those years ago,” she said.
Despite the challenges that come with teaching Chuene says she has never pictured herself in any other profession.
Excellent time management skills are needed, but she also believes in balance.
“I do allow myself the opportunity to rest. It’s important to read the Bible too. Every day I count my blessings. I have five children and five grandchildren and I have no regrets about my life choices. When I meet my former learners in town, I have nothing to be ashamed of. It is a blessing,” she said.
Speaking on retirement, Chuene says everything has to come to an end eventually. “There will come a time where I will have to retire. After that, I will still continue to work at home, as I have grandchildren whom I have to teach. At church I have Sunday School, youth and young women that I teach. But for now, aging is a true blessing.”
