Boy-learner grooming programme for Ivypark

The programme aims to help shape boy students into one day being model men in society through life skills, values, principles and conduct lessons.

POLOKWANE- Willem Opperman, the principal of Laerskool Ivypark says they have established a boy learner grooming programme at the school to help shape boy students into one day being model men in society.

The programme, he said, teaches life skills, values, principles and how to conduct themselves in general.

“Roughly 50% of all learners live with a single parent, and it is our duty as teachers and heads of school to play the father role in their life. We teach them manners and respect, as well as the proper way of being around their female classmates. We want our learners to be good fathers and upstanding citizens, and through the process touch on issues such as gender-based violence and other societal ills.

“We believe if we teach them these values at an early age, they will grow up with them and lead by example in their communities.”

Opperman pleaded with parents to keep their sons busy with extramural activities.

“A lazy mind is the devil’s playground. Boys who are busy with productive activities hardly think of unscrupulous things to do.”

He said the school will celebrate Father’s Day on June 15, raising money for learners who stay with their moms only.

“We are going to buy presents for them, which they will presenting to their moms in their capacity as mom and dad. Each learner will receive a chocolate and some delicacies. We want them to enjoy the day, just like any other learner who lives with both parents.”

The manager for the Pietersburg schools circuit, Biddy Ratale has pleaded with principals and teachers to fulfil their role as fathers for those learners who don’t have male role models at home.

“All learners need care and support, but learners without male role models need extra care and support. For some, the school is the only place where they feel loved. We are therefore encouraging teachers to pay attention and give the parental care where they see fit.”
