Point duty officer Khomotso assists with scholar safety

Parents and scholar transport operators are urged not to hesitate when such officers offer a helping hand to their children.

POLOKWANE – Point duty officers in the city manning roads near schools points, plead with road users to afford each other chances to pass through to avoid accidents, especially affecting learners, as the academic period resumes soon.

The work of such officers includes controlling traffic for pedestrians and motorists at once. For roads near schools, it is to ensure that learners cross safely and are not denied the opportunity to pass by pedestrians.

“Exercise patience or leave earlier to prepare for your travelling time, so that you are not in a hurry,” Tom Naude area point duty officer, Khomotso Tolo says.

Some motorists are often a challenge for pedestrians and point duty officers as many either do not provide the officer a chance to do their work or do not adhere to rules for the latter to cross when instructed to, by officers, Tolo remarks.

“The road was designed for both pedestrians and motorists but we have witnessed that this kind of  behaviour makes learners afraid of crossing the road”, she adds.

Parents and scholar transport operators are urged not to hesitate when such officers offer a helping hand to their children, to cross the road into or out of the school premises.

Tolo also remarked that point duty officers operate Mondays to Fridays at peak times.
