POLOKWANE – Last Thursday, Mall of the North (MotN) welcomed the class of 2025 prefects from four local primary schools for a fun-filled bowling tournament.
The event, dubbed the MotN Prefects’ Bowling Bash, took place at The Fun Company SA and featured teams from Mitchell House, PEPPS, Flora Park Comprehensive Primary School, and Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos (Oosskool).
The tournament aimed to foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie among the young leaders, while also promoting a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
As part of the event, Review had the opportunity to speak with prefects from each participating school about what leadership means to them.
Aurora Makhomisane (Gr 7 Mitchell House prefect): Leadership means having the ability as an individual to influence and guide your fellow learners in the right direction.Joseph Lekganyane (Gr 7 Mitchell House prefect): Leadership is also about being authentic, ethical, and responsible for one’s actions and decisions. I believe the following qualities are essential to being a successful leader.Resego Tlagadi (PEPPS Gr 11 prefect): Leadership is about collaboration and inspiring others to do their best work. As a prefect, I aim to be direct and collaborate with my fellow learners by delegating tasks, leading by example, and making sure they know I care as their leader.Wernich Daily (Gr 6 Oosskool prefect): Leadership is a set of mindsets and behaviour that aligns fellow learners in a collective direction, which enables them to work together and accomplish shared goals, and helps them adjust to changing environments within the school.Phetolo Mokwena (Gr 6 prefect from Oosskool): Leadership means to be have honesty, confidence, commitment and creativity. Valuable leadership skills include the ability to delegate, inspire and communicate effectively.Denay Steyn (Gr 6 prefect from Oosskool): Leadership means you must have empathy, tact, teaching ability, fairness, confidence, accountability, innovation, passion, flexibility, and dedication are key qualities as a prefect.
Raeesa Sempe is a Caxton Award-winning Digital Editor with nine years’ experience in the industry. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand and started her journey as a community journalist for the Polokwane Review in 2015. She then became the online journalist for the Review in 2016 where she excelled in solidifying the Review’s digital footprint through Facebook lives, content creation and marketing campaigns. Raeesa then moved on to become the News Editor of the Bonus Review in 2019 and scooped up the Editorial Employee of the Year award in the same year. She is the current Digital Editor of the Polokwane Review-Observer, a position she takes pride in.
