Thirty-five young skateboarding enthusiasts gathered in the overflow parking area for the annual Mall of the North Skateboarding Competition & Clinic hosted on Saturday and Sunday.
The winners, Marcell Strydom and Damon Nortjé and other competitors displayed great enthusiasm, talent and skill.
“It was a major success and a competition in 2017 is evident. We are lucky not to have had any casualties during the competition. We will definitely focus on preparing a brand new and exciting obstacle course for next year,” organiser and professional skateboarder Rynardt van der Merwe said.
Participants came from as far as Mbombela to compete in the under and over 16 categories respectively and were judged on various aspects of skateboarding such as jumps and tricks.
“We saw some amazing tricks by some of the competitors. I am happy to see that there is still a lot of passion for skateboarding among youngsters,” Van der Merwe said.
The clinic was also a success with a few skaters attending and learning the finer details of skateboarding.
Strydom won the u.16 category with Tebalo Lephoto and Jody Ellis second and third respectively. Nortjé won the over 16 category and Phodiso Moroeshe was second and Francois Breedt third.
