Crash witness stymied by police’s lack of action

A witness to an accident is flabbergasted the police failed to charge the driver who fled the scene.

The witness, who did not wish to be named, said a red Mazda cut in front of a young man and woman on a scooter at the corner of Kingsway and Adams Road on Friday, 14 February at about 5pm. “The vehicle didn’t make contact with the scooter, but it crashed and paramedics attended the scene,” said the witness.

The driver of the Mazda sped off with the witness in chase. “On Fynn Road I jammed him in. When I questioned him, he said he was on his way to KwaMakhutha to report the incident. I knew he was lying to get away, so I confiscated his car keys and went to Toti police station.”

The witness gave details of the incident to police, who said they could not attend the scene as they had no van. “I even offered to drive an officer to the scene, but they refused.”

Upon returning to the scene, the witness was gratified to see a police van that was driving past the scene, was in attendance. “I was told to return the car keys, which the police gave back to the driver.”

The KZN police media centre said it checked the administration system from 11 February until 14 February and there is no related incident registered at Amanzimtoti police station.

“I don’t know what else to do,” said the witness. “I’ve done all I can.” Other witnesses or the people injured in the accident can contact the Sun on 031-903-2341.
