Counterfeit booze intercepted on intercity bus

Seventy-two cases of alcohol was seized.

TOTI police seized alcohol on a bus on the N2, travelling from Durban station en-route to Cape Town on Monday, 25 August.

“At about 6pm, Toti SAPS task team got a tip off regarding alleged counterfeit alcohol on a bus, which was intercepted along the N2, opposite Adams Road and a search was conducted. Seventy-two cases of 750ml Smirnoff vodka was found,” said Toti police communications officer, Capt Charlene van der Spuy.

The bus driver was asked to contact the person who requested the goods to be transported. A while later, a driver with a bakkie arrived and the alcohol was offloaded.
“The task team was holding observation throughout the process. When the driver drove off, he was stopped by members who confiscated the bakkie along with the load.”

He was arrested and a case of possession of alleged counterfeit alcohol was opened. The alcohol was handed to the exhibits register. Four bottles were booked out by a member of the forensic laboratory for analysis.

The driver appeared in court on Tuesday, 26 August, where he was charged. The case was postponed for further investigation, awaiting the outcome of the forensic report. The arrest and seizure of the goods were affected by Sgt Sabelo Xaba of the Currency Detection Unit and Sgt Thembinkosi Thwala and Cst Mandilakhe Sumayela of Toti SAPS task team.
