Winkle burglars caught redhanded

The suspect had household goods on him, including a plasma TV, laptop and X-Box.

A sting operation between Toti SAPS and the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) has netted another brace of housebreakers this week.

According to CCPO operations manager, Leon Joone, foot patrol guards spotted a possible housebreaking suspect on Thursday, 9 October at about 4.30am and gave chase into the taxi rank in Winklespruit.

“The suspect had household goods on him, including a plasma TV, laptop and X-Box,” said Leon.

A follow-up investigation established that the man had broken into a Middleton Road house in Winklespruit.

While on the scene, the robber’s phone rang. “It was a second housebreaker who had left to get someone to collect the stolen goods.

The second housebreaker was conned into returning to the taxi rank.

Toti SAPS W/O Ron Ashburner set up a sting operation and when a white bakkie arrived to collect the goods, the second housebreaker was arrested. He was found in possession of another laptop and Playstation, which were linked to the housebreaking.”

Two other men in the vehicle were detained and the matter will be further investigated by Toti SAPS.

“It was awesome that with teamwork between the CCPO and Toti SAPS, more housebreakers are now off our streets,” said Leon.

“My sincere gratitude goes out to the two amazing CCPO officers, who relentlessly persued the suspects,” said homeowner, Clive Naidoo.
“And to W/O Ashburner and his colleague, who even went back to recover my five-year-old tablet.

It is people like these who give us hope. From my family and I, our heartfelt thanks go out to the CCPO and Toti SAPS for recovering our goods and making this a painless experience.”
