Community hero humbled by award

A large group turned up to witness George Snodey being honoured.

TOTI crime fighter, George Snodey was honoured with a Community Hero Award in recognition of his bravery and fight against crime at a special function at Lords and Legends on Tuesday evening, 17 November.

A large group of community members turned up to see him receive his award which was presented by George Lithgow and Gaylene Allen of My Sapphire CommUnity.

The award was initiated by Glynis Rathbone of My Sapphire CommUnity after George was seriously injured in a crash on the N2 on Friday, 25 September and spent several weeks in hospital.

“We are here tonight to honour and celebrate George,” said chairman of the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre, Craig Chamier.

Lithgow also recognised it as a special night. “George is one of those individuals who makes a difference and doesn’t take no for an answer. He gets involved and is an exemplary figure,” he said.

He urged other individuals to stand up and be counted, instead of being eager to criticise. “If individuals worked together to do their bit, we can turn our town around. George is involved in keeping the crime down, others can get involved in other projects such as keeping road verges tidy, monitoring potholes and infrastructure and turn our town into the new Ballito of KZN. We should follow George’s example, that’s the dedication the town needs.”

Snodey was humbled by the recognition. “I thank everyone who has taken time out to attend. I am getting back on my feet and dealing with my recovery the same way if had been shot or injured during a rugby match.”

On Friday, 20 November George returns to hospital for an eye operation. He expects his knee brace to come off in a week.

“I didn’t really want something like this. I am just passionate about keeping crime out of the area.”
