Mandela Day effort makes 1,200 sandwiches

Thanks to every person who contributed

AN incredible 1,200 sandwiches were prepared by enthusiastic volunteers as a result of local businesses and willing individuals gathering together to heed the international call of Mandela Day on Monday, 18 July.

Seadoone Mall was a flurry of activity with the volunteers taking part in the Domino Foundation’s exciting action stations, designed to assist the community by contributing to its programmes. Over 4,000 pupils are positively impacted through the programmes every school day.

Although based in Durban North, the foundation partnered with Kingsway Church International to open up a feeding kitchen to provide sandwiches for local schools.

Cheryl Dann, who heads up the feeding kitchen, was blown away by the community’s generosity. “We had a lot of volunteers, as well as people coming to the mall who just pitched in and helped where they could. Corporate teams came and joined in making sandwiches, some noisy and festive, while others just quietly got on with it.

We had one corporate team come in with only four people to make sandwiches, but halfway through their time, the table was full of people who were walking past and decided to pitch in. It was an amazing experience.”

Along with the hundreds of sandwiches that will be distributed to local schools and crèches, volunteers also prepared 30 relief packs for families in crisis. Each hamper can feed a family of four for one week.

Throughout the day, community members were also encouraged to drop off essential daily items at the donation station.

“Thanks to every person who contributed to Mandela Day,” said the foundation’s Megan Rich. “Thanks also to the Coffee Theatre in Seadoone Mall that provided coffee and tea and a plate of snacks for each person at no charge. Woolworths also donated 30 litres of boxed fruit juice and bottles of juice, as well as packs of oranges for the Siyabonga school children.

Your actions have contributed to the domino effect of changing a life, changing a community.”
