Armed robbers target shopping centre in Amanzimtoti

A gang of armed robbers set their sights on an Amanzimtoti shopping centre. First responders, ET Rapid Response, described the ordeal.

AN Amanzimtoti shopping centre was the target of an armed business robbery on the evening of January 16. Officers of ET Rapid Response responded first to the robbery in progress and were met by approximately 12 armed suspects using multiple vehicles, making their escape by the Arbour Road exit point after robbing a store.

Tony Lokker, of ET Rapid Response, said that the suspects unleashed a hail of gunfire towards the security company’s officers when they arrived on the scene. He explained that the suspects were placed strategically, waiting for any security or SAPS.

“Both our response vehicles were damaged during the shootout, fortunately no response officers sustained any injuries during this ordeal. Some stock abandoned by the suspects was secured on scene. We are grateful that our members were not injured during the ordeal,” added Lokker.

Anusha Timul, marketing manager for Galleria Mall has confirmed the incident and said that the matter is currently under investigation by the Amanzimtoti police.
