Irresponsible drivers put children’s lives at risk [LETTER]

Parents are urged to comply with the rules of the road to ensure safety near schools.

EDITOR – When I drop my child off at a local primary school, I am a witness to the complete lack of road sense and safety from some parents and drivers.

Parents stop and park on the yellow lines, double park and generally cause traffic disruptions. This then leads to massive congestion and complete chaos.

I have personally witnessed parents stopping on the pedestrian crossing. In what K-53 method of driving is this legal or allowed?

I then drive past another two schools on my way to work and the situation is very similar. I have seen principals, deputy principals, teachers and even the crossing guards asking parents to please obey the road rules, to little or no effect.

I pose the question, does a child have to be knocked over before people start driving both safely and according to the rules of the road? It takes very little effort on the driver’s part to simply follow the road markings and do what is right and what they should have learnt when completing their drivers test.

I beg, please start driving safely and with other road users in mind.
