IT’S the men’s turn to do Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) proud this week, when they played composite league last Sunday.
Taking advantage of their home course, they won their encounter against Royal Durban and Selborne.
Umkomaas defeated Selborne by a clear 10 shots, a very good win indeed. Well done, guys, you have certainly taken a leaf out of the women’s book – long may the winning streak continue.
While the men did battle at UGC last Sunday, three of our girls, Sabiha Bacaus, Annette Gillett and Leigh Beckerling, played at Kloof Golf Club in the Durban Region Championships. The weather in Kloof wasn’t too kind to the players, quite nippy and windy, not like the coastal courses, but the girls managed quite a good showing. Sabiha had the best two rounds, shooting a 72 nett in the morning and a 75 nett in the afternoon. Well done to you all.
Tim Clark played in the Wyndham Championships this weekend at Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, North Carolina. Doing extremely well on the final day, he shot a 64, ending the day on a final score of -5 at T26th. Ernie Els finished on -6 with Rory Sabbattini the best South African to finish on -10. The winner was newcomer Patrick Reed who finished on -14. Next weekend the players head off to play in the Barclays in New Jersey. Should be a good one to watch out for.
Wednesday was the usual individual stableford. The club welcomed ex-member Alan Green to the competition, as he was down on the South Coast on holiday. It was nice to see Alan again. It seems as though Cedric ‘snakehips’ Kruger is at it again – Cedric slithered into first place on an excellent 45 points, followed by Piet Vermaak, 6 shots off the pace on 39 points. Piet counted out Fred Welch in to third place, also on 39.
Saturday was one of UGC’s big sponsored alliance days, where club captain Peter Toward welcomed all visitors. These included Peter Stoppel, captain of Southern Natal Nomads, Louw Lodder, Alan Green, George Mzimela and the whole of the Seeff Estate Agency team, Rod James, Pam Tomlinson and Kirsten McBeth, who played in the competition. The day was a tremendous success, thanks to all the sponsors and players who supported the alliance day. Congratulations to the winners, Barrie Taylor, Warren Taylor, Dave Kemp and Val Hazell on 95 points, with Bruce Sutcliffe, Brendon Sutcliffe, Ken Koster and Norman Msomi taking second spot on 92 points, counting out third placed Rob Finlay, John Gillett, Andy Davidge and Annette Gillett also on 92. Fourth and fifth places were snatched up on a count out by Jeff Govender, Moonsamy Nelson, George Mzimela and Nishalin Nelson followed by 5th placed Alan Green, Brian Daventry-Bull, Ken Harding and Wally Kent, all on 91. . Nearest the pins were 4th Warren Taylor, 9th Nevio Turco, 13th Norman Msomi and 17th John Gillett. Derek Airey took home the prize in the ‘non-skills department’, the meat draw on ticket 50.
Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to sponsors Seeff.
Next Saturday, 24 August, is the club’s huge annual fundraising day. Many thanks to all who have put their names down to play. The competition is a fourball better ball with two scores to count. The time sheet has one or two slots left in the earlier part of the morning so call the office for more information.
On Sunday, 25 August there is social golf.
A reminder that on 14 September it’s the ‘Zimbo Trophy’ competition, a very different format which Peter and Sue Boshoff have put together for the players. This is a magnificent floating trophy which is well-worth winning. The time sheet is up, so support Sue and Peter’s competition.
