Kapp climbs Kilimanjaro

Mandy Willemse did the 30km walk on Saturday

RUN Walk For Life (RWFL) had a good week for training and weekend for racing, with only one awful windy day.

Annetjie Kapp (67) is on her way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro on the Machana Route, and will start on 1 September to finish on 7 September.

Her training started on 1 February after her husband died, and up to now she has done 750 kilometres in training, which included a lot of staircases. She has trained very hard for this event, and RWFL wishes her all the luck to reach her dream goal.

Mandy Willemse did the 30km walk on Saturday, 24 August and fared well, considering she is actually a runner.

Other members did the 10km Mandela Race and they also have did well.

The ‘Run for Faron-Mae’ team ran the Mandela Marathon (42km) on Sunday, 25 August. All of them did well, finishing the race in ample time. Now they gear up for the Hundred Miler on 20 September.

Faron-Mae Fisher has Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) type 0 (aglycogenosis) and anyone who wants to sponsor the team can pledge per km or just donate outright. For more details on how to pledge, contact Debbie Ellish on 084-402-5800 or Jan Botha on 082-290-4005.

RWFL hopes for sunshine and good weather for the rest of the week, so that everyone can put their running/walking shoes back on and return to training.

All members who received trophies last year must return them so that the club can start preparing for this year’s end of year event. It will be a great outdoors event this time, which promises to be a lot of fun. The event and time will be given closer to November.

RWFL urges the public to don their running or walking shoes and join in training, the benefits of which are plentiful.

Members are reminded of the upcoming South Coast Marathon. There is pre-entry online so go to Toti AC website to enter. Call Des van der Merwe on 082-806-0348 or Chris Stange on 083-301-3632.

For more details on RWFL activities, call Jan on 082-290-4025.

This Sunday, 1 September, the famous Township to Township 42km/21km is on the cards and two Toti novices, Mandy and Val, will attempt it. The club wishes them well with their first 42km.
