Cardinals victorious in barfly baseball

Special mention must be made of sponsors Victory Kwikspar and the blood bank for their support.

ON Saturday, Cardinals Baseball Club hosted its annual barfly tournament with five sides entered namely Cardinals, Ashley, Hillary, Sluggers and Super Kings.

In total, 10 games were played in a single round robin and Cardinals barfly team emerged victorious, followed closely by Hillary in second place, with Super Kings and Sluggers taking 3rd place and Ashley last.

The tournament was played in good spirits, with perfect weather conditions. Spectators were treated to some entertaining baseball with a number of balls finding their way over the tapes.

Special mention must be made of sponsors Victory Kwikspar and the blood bank for their support. All the prizes were appreciated. Thanks also go to all the helpers on the day, including the umpires whose support was invaluable.

On Sunday Cardinals Major A played Rockets at Hoy Park.

Cardinals started the game and didn't score with the first batting. Rockets went in to bat and scored one run, to which Cardinals replied with four runs in the second frame, with some good, disciplined batting. The rest of the game was pretty even until the last batting for Rockets, when they scored three runs to level the game at 4-4. They were two down with bases loaded and their batter got a good, level hit in the air. Then out of nowhere, Cardinals' second base Gareth Purchase took an amazing diving catch at full stretch which finished the game at 4-4. This was one of the best catches seen in years.

Junior practise will continue this Saturday at the baseball field behind Lords starting at 1pm, so all U9s should go down as the club needs to start registration. They have entered a side into the U9 KZN league which will start in October. If anyone would like to join, it is not too late, just go down this Saturday. Call Craig on 084-500-0079 for more details.
