Lizette comes up trumps in 100 Miler
As usual the big bang cannon of the SA Navy heralded the start and off the athletes went to battle it out into the night.
FINALLY the time for the 100 Miler arrived and the Run Walk for Life Toti (RWFL) team set off to Pietermaritzburg on Friday.
With the registration and debriefing behind them, the athletes lined up at the start, nervous for the long night and day lying in front of them.
As usual the big bang cannon of the SA Navy heralded the start and off the athletes went to battle it out into the night. At about 10pm the wind came up and it started to rain, not the ideal weather for a good run.
The supporters were running up and down to the local garage to buy warm beverages to keep the athletes going. By 5am it was extremely cold, and some of the athletes started dropping out. However Lizette and the rest kept on going.
At 7am the 50 Miler athletes set off to join the balance of the 100 Milers, helping to keep them positive. The assistance of Lizette’s helpers kept her focused and positive.
At noon the 20 Milers joined the others, in weather that had still not let up. However Lizette and her helpers kept their focus and at 6.16pm on Saturday, Lizette went over the finishing line in a time of 23 hours 16 minutes 44 seconds, making her the second woman and seventh runner to complete the first 100 Miler Capital Classic.
Lizette also won the triple challenge that consists of your time in Comrades, the first 80km of the Longest Day and the first 80km of the 100 Miler. RWFL is proud of Lizette.
Lizette and Jan thank all those assisting them along their journey – there are too many to mention but without them she could not have achieved this feat.
