Amanzimtoti fighter heads to world championships

After winning both her fights at Africa Champs and reigning as the 2024 IMMAF Africa Featherweight Women's Champion, Demi-Shaye Thomas now heads to the world championships.

DEMI-SHAYE Thomas (24) is set to represent South Africa at the IMMAF World Championships in Uzbekistan from November 5 to 10.

She is the reigning 2024 IMMAF Africa featherweight women’s champion and secured her title by winning both her fights in Namibia in May.

“Winning gold at Africa Champs felt surreal, and heading to worlds is a dream come true. Despite the nerves, I am fit, active, training hard and ready for the competition. I’m also currently in fight camp to hone in on final preparations,” said Thomas.

The Bushido MMA Gym athlete has been competing in MMA for about three years and trains with her father and coach, Greg, which has afforded her the opportunity to climb the ranks a lot quicker than most.

Although she never thought she would get into the sport, she said it has transformed her life.

“It changed me as a person – from a shy, insecure girl with a lack of confidence – it changed the whole perception of who I am and what I’m capable of,” said Thomas.

She emphasised the importance of self-belief and mental strength in competition, stating that these qualities play a crucial role in performance on the mat. “Separate from competing, it’s important, as women, to have awareness and learn self-defence for any potential dangerous situations we could be faced with,” said Thomas.

She added that she is excited to see the growing interest and participation of women in the sport, which she believes is a positive development for the MMA community.

The cost of the championships is about R40 000, which includes travel, accommodation and entry fees. To help make her dream a reality, consider donating, sponsoring or making her an ambassador for your company, which will get international coverage.

In an effort to raise funds, artists are encouraged to grab their instruments and join the open-mic fundraiser at the 1st Amanzimtoti Scout’s hall at 5 Drake Road on October 27, from 09:00 to 12:00. Artists are free, and it’s R50 for spectators and R200 for vendors.
