South Coast Stingers crowned champions of amateur league

The South Coast Stingers are aiming to retain their title this year and are optimistic of their chances.

A TEAM of four talented golfers, the ‘South Coast Stingers’, all members of the Amanzimtoti Country Club, were crowned the inaugural team champions of the KZN Golf Union Mid-Amateur League.

The team, comprised of Mark Cowie, Kalvin van Rensburg, Vivek Singh and Gitesh Maharaj, took home the title towards the end of last year, coming out on top among many teams around the province.

Spokesperson of the team, Cowie, explained that the scoring was captured in a gross medal format, where the best three scores out of a team of four would be used to allot the team a total number of shots per event. The league commenced at the beginning of last year and ran throughout the provincial golfing calendar.

“We were elated at being crowned the first ever champions of this new event on the KZN Mid Am circuit. We knew going into the start of the season we would stand a very good chance of lifting the cup, based on the variety of skill sets that each of our team offers and the variety of courses we would be playing,” he said.

Cowie added that the team have all been putting in hard hours of work at the driving range during the off-season and are ready to hit the ground running.

Van Rensburg was crowned as the individual championship winner for last year and was the backbone of the Stingers side. Van Rensburg, Maharaj and Singh were also selected to represent KZN at the Mid-Amateur Inter-provincial Tournament held at Humewood Country Club in early October.
