Full house league wins for men’s A, B and C bowlers

ROUND six of the men’s interclub league took place over the weekend throughout the district. Wanderers Bowling Club's A side scored a “full house” seven points in beating DHSOB at home.

Richard, Ant, Terrence and Pat looked all but dead and buried at 3-13 down after 11 ends, but rallied well to win 24-18 going away. Dennis, Arnie, Robbie and Ken as well as Steve, Bob, Mike and Eric both led from the start and finished on 30-8 up and 36-9 up respectively. This gives the team a shot difference of 53 and should greatly help with the rankings. The B and C sides both played away to Durban and Ridley Park respectively and both returned triumphant with 5-0 victories. Both Jimmy and Jumbo and their teams won by nine shots for the B side, and Robin and Eric for the C side won by four and three shots respectively. For the D side, Peter Tayfield and co managed an eight shot victory at home to Stella Park, but Gordon Chizzie and co went down by 14, but two points for the win is better than nothing at all, which sadly is what happened to the E side, which went down 0-5 to Hillcrest away. Ken Koch’s team were a little unlucky to lose by only one shot, but Errol’s men went down by 16 or so.

Some club competitions were played during the week and results to hand include the mixed trips, where Arnie Harper, Margaret Eitner and Chantal Hearnshaw won 24-15 against Barbara Neill and the two Jeffs, Bolt and Cronje; Mary Rust with Bill Addinall and Johan Nel had a good win of 31-14 over Andy Andraschko, Ken and Sonja Koch. In the women’s points singles Brenda Andraschko breasted the tape first to reach 104 to Gwen Taits’ 86.

Two matches occurred in the women’s nominated pairs. Jackie Freeman and Jo-Anne Jordaan scored 20 to the 16 of Heather Beselaar and Lorraine Du Preez, and Barbara Neill and Annie Smit, although taking the match down to the wire squeaked in at 18-17 against Sonja Koch and Chantal Hearnshaw.

Next weekend Saturday, 10 July and Sunday, 11 July features the playing of the annual “champion of champions” tournament, in which all the open singles winners from around the clubs in the whole district, both men and women separately, meet each other in a play-off to determine the overall winners. The men are playing at Stella Park and the women at Parkhill. Gladys Myburgh and Steve Van Rooyen represent Wanderers BC and members are urged to support them at their venues wherever possible.

The hugely popular breakfast trips is scheduled for Sunday, 11 July. To enter, confirm or amend your team, call official Jeff Bolt on 082-808-7793.

Friday, 9 July is a public holiday, so please note that the snowball and meat raffle will thus be held on Thursday, 8 July at 7pm, and a live two-piece band “Junction” will perform from 6pm to 10.30pm. Put on your dancing shoes, and be sure to take your membership card to be able to claim your prize in the snowball, which now stands at R800. Last week Claude Bond was not present when his number was drawn.

Various meat draw winners last week were Chris Fourie lamb pack; Dianne Swan chicken fillets; Richard Hendicott rump steak; Billy Lottering pork ribs and Graham Jeffs pork shoulder roast.

Snippet: Here are some tips taken from the book “Bowl to Win” by David Bryant and Tony Allcock: Don’t waste mental energy speculating about future developments; be fully committed to the shot before going to the mat; practise for a specific purpose; cease practise on a good end; be a good winner as well as a good loser – you are bound to have plenty of experience of both; always play positively to win.
