Former refinery manager faces corruption charges

The accused was charged for corruption after he allegedly demanded a R300 000 bribe from the supplier hired to dislodge tanks at Engen.

A former Engen manager, who was arrested and appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on corruption charges, will appear again on February 17.

It is alleged that Sandile Dlamini (41) demanded a R300 000 bribe from a supplier at the company refinery.

Spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, said in March this year, a transport company was awarded a tender for dislodging of tanks at Engen.

“It is alleged that upon submission of payment and documents for the work completed, Dlamini, who is employed as a manager at Engen, demanded a gratification of R300 000. The complainant reported the matter to the General Manager and further reported to the Hawks members for criminal investigation,” said Mhlongo.

Dlamini was arrested during an undercover sting operation where he was allegedly caught red-handed after receiving R100 000 cash from the complainant.

“Members of the Hawks Durban Serious Corruption Investigation arrested him for corruption on November 27.

“Dlamini briefly appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today and was granted R5000 bail,” Mhlongo added.

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, welcomed the arrest and applauded the members for the good work.

External communications manager at Engen, Gavin Smith said the accused resigned from the company.

“He is no longer employed by Engen. As this is an active legal matter, we are unable to share further details at this stage. However, Engen takes allegations of unethical behaviour extremely seriously and is fully cooperating with the authorities,” said Smith.
