Armed gang hijacks delivery truck on N2

Three armed suspects forced the truck driver to pull off the road and hijacked the vehicle.

A TRUCK driver transporting goods worth over R280 000 was hijacked on the N2 southbound on March 10.

According to a police report, the driver, security guard and his assistant were en route to deliver perishable goods when unidentified armed suspects approached them.

Police spokesperson in Montclair Constable Nora Ndlovu said while the driver was travelling on the N2, an unidentified vehicle approached from the driver’s side and signalled for the truck to stop.

“Fearing for his safety, the driver continued driving. The suspects’ vehicle then drove closer and the driver noticed one of the suspects pointing a firearm at him. The driver continued driving until the suspect allegedly fired a shot, causing him to panic and pull over on the side of the road near Lamontville, just before Umlazi turn-off,” said Ndlovu.

Three armed suspects then exited their vehicle, forced the driver and his assistants out of the truck, and took control of it. The suspects later forced the victims back into the truck and drove off with them.

“The victims were later dropped off in Umlazi U Section near a shopping centre. The stolen cargo consisted of perishable goods, mainly meat with an estimated value of R283 500. There were no injuries reported. The suspects were wearing balaclavas,” said Ndlovu.

Ndlovu added that police are investigating a case of truck hijacking.
