Wentworth maestro to release debut single

Ashton 'Boya' Lottering will be launching his first single, Mbambe, featuring local vocalist, Yandisa Dlamini, on various digital platforms on June 30.

FROM creating music beats in his bedroom as a teenager, to releasing his debut single a decade later, Ashton ‘Boya’ Lottering, is on his way to achieving his musical dreams.

The 23-year-old of Wentworth, launches his first single, Mbambe, featuring local vocalist, Yandisa Dlamini, on various digital platforms on June 30.

“It is an amapiano feel good song. The process behind the song came about in a studio session I had with Yandisa. I had completed the beat the day before and played it to her. She then completed the lyrics and I recorded her vocals and that’s how Mbambe came about. Following the launch of the song, we will start working on a music video and hopefully launch it before the end of the year,” he said.

Lottering, who hails from Johannesburg, said his passion for music and making his own beats started at age 13.

“I like different genres of music, however, growing up in a neighbourhood where music is constantly on rotation, played a great role in my life. I began creating my own beats after an old high-school friend introduced me to Fruityloops, a music production software. While I have made other songs over the years, Mbambe is the first song I will officially release, ” he said.

Lottering, a second year Video Technology (screen arts) student at the Durban University of Technology, said while he faced many challenges pursuing his passion, he remained focused on his dream.

“Some of the challenges was not having a studio and proper equipment to operate and create music with. However, despite those challenges, I managed to find a way to create music. When everything seemed to be against me, I kept my mind on my end goal which is to become someone in the music industry and life itself,” he said.

Lottering said there have been many highlights, such as being recognised for his music production and signing with a record label, Bhoza Records and Publishers owned by Faime Weich.

“The record label has given me the opportunity to be part of a solid team of people who are like minded when it comes to music,” he said.

Lottering said his goal is to provide and produce a variety of music, such as lo-fi, R&B/ soul, hiphop, trap, amapiano and afro-pop, among others.

“I also draw inspiration from local and international producers like turbothegreat, wheezyouttahere and ZooccicokeDope, and using what I learn, I incorporate that into my own unique style,” he said.

Lottering said one of his future goals is to collaborate and create with as many local and international artists as possible. “I want to create music that will leave behind a legacy, not only for me, but for those I collaborate with,” he said.

His advice to aspiring artists is to create music and use it as a platform to express themselves.

“Despite one’s challenges, music should remain the go-to for peace of mind,” he said.

Mbambe will be available on all digital streaming platforms.
