Foundation spreads warmth this winter

Clairwood residents were treated to free healthcare services, provided clothes and blankets, as well as a hot meal.

HOPING to bring warmth and joy to the lives of those that are disadvantaged, the non-profit organisation, Mediskills Healthcare Foundation, recently held its winter drive in Clairwood.

Allison Andrew, the founder and chairperson of the organisation, said about 120 residents were treated to free healthcare services, provided clothes and blankets, as well as a hot meal.

“Our goal is to bring some joy into people’s lives and provide them with proper health care. Many of us take something like a blanket or even a pair of socks for granted, but for another person, it would mean the world to them as they don’t have to feel cold at night,” she said.

A team of volunteers sort out clothes that were given to the residents.

Andrew, who is the founder of the Mediskills Academy, said she saw a need while providing voluntary health care services in various communities. She said this led her to opening the organisation in 2022.

“I saw the struggle, and I knew the only way I could really help was to start an organisation which would enable me to approach possible sponsors. We have since been able to provide free health care services, meals and other items to people living in various areas, such as Isipingo, Wentworth, The Bluff, and as far as Verulam,” she said.

Andrew, said during the initiative in Clairwood, the residents received various health care services, hot meals, blankets and clothing.

Lovie Pillay, a community health worker at the Merebank Clinic, checks Clairwood resident, Mayeza Khwezi’s blood pressure and sugar.

“We partnered with the Merebank Clinic, who provided TB testing, HIV testing, blood pressure and sugar checks, as well as general health advice. It was a wonderful day for the residents as well as the foundation. Seeing the joy on everyone, especially children’s faces makes what we do worth it,” she said.

Andrew said the foundation’s goal was to help more people, however, they depended on sponsorships.

“The more sponsors we get, the bigger our outreach is. However, I am grateful and thankful for all those that sponsored us for this drive, you have helped us make a difference in the lives of those that are vulnerable,” she said.
