Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the Vispol members stationed at the police station were conducting routine patrols in Merebank when they received information about the attempted theft of motor vehicles.

The suspects allegedly tried to steal a white GWM Kombi, but their attempts were thwarted when security guards from PT Alarms arrived at the scene.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the suspects fled, and PT Alarms’ officers gave chase. Our members proceeded to the scene and, upon arrival, we met these officers led by officer Dhevan Govindasamy who whad also there responded to the same incident.

“The four suspects aged between 32 and 41 were already placed under arrest. A white Renault Sandero vehicle that the suspects used to commit a crime was immediately searched by the police and PT Alarms officers,” said Gumede. The officers found bags containing house-breaking implements, vehicle-breaking implements, eight computer boxes, spanners, a two-way black radio, various vehicle keys, electrical devices for testing, screwdrivers, shifting spanners, a bank card and cellphones.

“The recovered items were seized together with the vehicle. All four suspects were detained and charged with attempted theft of motor vehicles and unlawful possession of housebreaking and vehicle implements.

“The profiling of suspects will be conducted to determine if they are implicated in any other crimes,” said Gumede.

He said the theft of motor vehicles had been happening in the area quite frequently. “There is a possibility of a syndicate operating in the Merewent area, however, the police will investigate further,” he said.

The station commander Lieutenant Colonel Sinayo Mtshal and Vispol Commander Lieutenant Colonel Clive Myburg commended all the officers and the private security company for acting swiftly in arresting the suspects.

“It shows that our partnership is working in fighting crime in the Merewent area, and during this upcoming festive season it will be even more,” said Mtshali.
