Merebank resident raises South African flag high in India

Dr Jithen Deonath was selected as one of only two South African representatives to be a part of the programme.

MEREBANK’s Dr Jithen Deonath, was selected to go to the Know India Programme (Kip), representing South Africa in India from December 31 to January 22.

Initiated by the Indian Government and the Ministry of External Affairs, this programme allows young people of Indian background to visit India to become acquainted with their cultural heritage, progress and global influence.

Deonath said this was truly a golden opportunity and thanked the Indian government, the Indian Consulate in Durban and the Ministry of External Affairs for his inclusion in the group. He was selected as one of only two South African representatives to be a part of the programme.

Deonath attended PBD Convention while in India

He said they were invited to attend the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) Convention.

“The convention boasted speakers and various entertainment. The cultural dances on stage were very rich and depicted Odisha’s traditions. Dignitaries from all over India attended. Youth representatives from all over the world were also present. The PBD celebrates the contribution of Indian diaspora to India’s development. The reason why it’s held on January 9, is because Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from SA on this day to lead India’s freedom struggle that changed the lives of Indians forever,” he shared.

Deonath shared one of the most touching moments of his trip was being able to meet Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi. “It was a true honour for me to meet Modi in person. We were taken to parliament, an honour that a few outsiders experience. I gave a speech representing SA to all the participants and dignitaries involved in the programme,” shared Deonath.

Deonath shares his experiences from his time in India

He shared that the trip has helped him to realise that India is more than what you see in Bollywood. “This visit gave me in-depth insight into what India is. The phenomenal temples and other religious sites opened my mind to our ancient civilisation, history and heritage. This visit recharged and reinvigorated me,” he said.

Beyond the academic and cultural learning, Deonath adopted every aspect of Indian life, from riding rickshaws and going to local markets to eating the various foods of the country. This exposure helped broaden his perspective and reinforced in his mind the idea of preserving and celebrating heritage.

Now back home in South Africa, Deonath is keen to share his knowledge and experiences with youngsters. As an executive member of the MCF Youth League he intends to use his platform to urge others to apply to the Kip and other international opportunities. “I am committed to helping others seize this opportunity and ensuring our youth stay connected with their roots,” he said.
