Update: Truck driver freed, M4 freeway still gridlocked

A truck had collided head-on with a light motor vehicle on the M4 Southern Freeway near the Merebank off-ramp earlier today.

THE truck driver who was trapped following a collission with a motor vehicle has been removed from the wreckage while two other people were transported to a nearby hospital.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes as the M4 is still closed.

Ward Committee member for Roads, Transport and Stormwater in ward 66, Sharon Numan, said the road is still gridlocked. According to Numan, emergency services are engaged in crash recovery efforts.

Spokesperson for ALS Paramedics Garrith Jamieson said two people from a light motor vehicle had sustained moderate injuries.

“They were stabilised on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

“The M4 Southern Freeway has been closed at Merebank off-ramp and will be for some time to allow recovery to take place.

“At this stage the events leading up to the crash are unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” Jamieson added.
