Kenneth Stainbank gets a new look thanks to YouthMindset Empowerment

YouthMindset Empowerment took to the grassy greens of Kenneth Stainbank in hopes of giving it a fresh new look.

YOUTHMINDSET Empowerment (YME) hosted its Eco-Rush clean-up at Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve recently, where 30 committed volunteers came together to help protect one of Durban’s most precious open spaces.

Co-founder Samkelo Sibiya said that the volunteers were welcomed and motivated before the day could get underway. “The day started with a representative of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife who delivered an informative session that gave insight to all on the ecological importance of the reserve and the growing environmental dangers of pollution,” said Sibiya.

Volunteers were placed along the reserve’s trails, picnic spots and run-off areas, working hard to restore and keep the environment in order.

“YouthMindset Empowerment is not only about clean-ups, but also a movement. We want to show that if the youth are given a platform and the right tools, they step up. It is also about taking ownership of our spaces and our futures,” said Sibiya.

The clean-up was a collaborative success, with community stakeholders, including Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Mzansi Fresh Market, No Caption and Black Child Clothing, all coming through in a big way to contribute to the cause. Sibiya said their long-standing partner MetPac-SA also continued their unwavering support of YME’s youth empowerment process.

Co-founder Ntokozo Cele emphasised the greater purpose behind YME’s efforts.

“When you give young people a reason to care, and the tools to act, you don’t just change the environment, you change their mindset. One of our volunteers told me they used to walk past litter without thinking and now they see it as their responsibility. That is the kind of shift we’re here to create,” said Cele.

YME is now planning for its next Business and Gala Dinner, where the YouthMindset Empowerment Movement will officially be launched. The event will bring together sponsors, stakeholders and community leaders. YME is inviting brands, businesses, and changemakers to come together to co-build a more empowered and ecologically conscious youth.
